April 30th: Best backcountry pow descent of the season.

millcreek covered in snow on April 30th

Trust the Wasatch. Trust it to have an epic season and then for it to pound down 16 inches of sweet sweet pow for my last day of skiing.....and then sun came and it was an all round wicked day.

I woke up on Sunday morning not expecting the trees to be sugar-coated, obviously I didn't party late enough to experience the kick ass miracle of champagne powder in the middle of spring.

early morning goodness deposited all over unsuspecting vehicles

stefan gearing up

I was definitely a little lax getting out there, as the weather was supposed to be overcast, we didn't see any need to get up at the crack of dawn to fight for our lines.........but a 9am start worked fine.

mouth of BCC, look at the white smothered hills

We met up with a crew at the bottom of Big Cottonwood Canyon, still indecisive of what to attack and after a little meeting we headed up to Argenta couloir.

It was a consistently upward ascent, with a bitch of a kick-turn steep section at the end. After a week or two off from ski touring I have to admit it took me a little bit to warm up.

The top of Argenta is a few feet of the summit of Mt Kessler, we skirted around the summit to the skiers left (just next to God's Lawnmower) and dropped in for some amazing turns.

Bova needed a snorkel.

Although Argenta is not the steepest, nor gnarliest line I have skied this season, it was the best snow I have skied while touring for a long time. Knee deep light powder is a great way to finish the never-ending Utah season.
