Ski Salt Lake City Shootout

SLC pretty mountains

One of my goals this winter was to be involved in the SLC Shootout, after applying at the start of the season when the snow was non-existent it became apparent that the shootout would have to wait until the spring.

The Shootout is a 4-day photography competition, in which local and out of state photographers compete to make a portfolio based on skiing at the 4 resorts surrounding SLC: Alta, Snowbird, Brighton and Solitude.

This year was tough, for the week of the shootout there was practically no fresh snow as the last storm had been iced over by several spring days. It was a hunting game and only after a lot of effort did we find some decent snow.

The teams were drafted like a fantasy football team and I was lucky enough to be spend the week with Weston Deutschlander, Thayne Rich and photographer Patrick Orton. Between Thayne's sweet air skills, Weston's tele-turns and my brightly colored munchkin suit we took care of business.

I didn't expect to the four days to be easy, 2 hours of shooting exhausts me, let alone 4 days straight. We set off on Day 1 at 4:45am and we never looked back. By the end of the week I was shattered- I'm still stuck on my couch!

The highlight of the four days was heading out the back of Brighton to Wolverine Cirque and having 3 sweet, spring laps with Weston. We were working hard but it was nice to take a second and look at the awesome mountains around us.

After the last day of shooting I went with Team Somewhere Else (Jess, Sam and I) to Asian Buffet, all you can eat Asian cuisine to celebrate.

In the end our hard work and long hours paid off and our team took out the 2nd place portfolio. Stoked that our shin bang, and lack of sleep was worth it. Not so stoked that it hasn't snowed yet and the Snowbird FWT will be held on ice- fingers crossed it warms up enough to make a slush party!
