The venue, 'Staircase', a perfect example of classic Crested Butte style, hosts many trees, rocks and tight turns, not to mention a little bit of steep vertical.
mid-staircase- checking out a tight turnI chose a fairly basic line with one main air, trying to focus on my speed and fluidity. I found this venue fairly challenging. Although I enjoy the occasional mogul, I much prefer speed and big turns to mountain-goating...... for me, Staircase is most similar to a mogul course with a few trees and rocks thrown in!

scoping my landingWhile I carried speed throughout the run, I had a bit of a hiccup with my air, landing and then washing out, because of too much speed, almost crashing into a tree, I saved my pretty face with an elegant butt check, which didn't go down so well with the judges.
However, all in all, yesterday was a great day of experience, learning a bit more about the venue for future years and finding out that air is fun but better kept small in tight places!

Clare Burns, Jackie Paaso, Susan Mol and a friendly Ski patroller watching the carnage and shreddin'I didn't make it up to finals today, preferring to nurse a bit of a sore back, before heading to SLC for a pit stop on the way to Kirkwood for the next FWT stop. I hear there is lots of snow and some fun skiing in CA!
